Design Director
I joined Brigade in early 2016 as Design Director, stepping into a high-stakes challenge: build and launch a politically-focused platform in time for the U.S. Presidential Election — with no full-time design team and only nine months to deliver.
We set out to create “The World’s First Voter Network” — a space where Americans could explore issues, compare candidates, verify their voter records, and engage in meaningful discourse. At a time when political polarization was accelerating, we believed design could help facilitate clarity, trust, and participation in the democratic process. The result was a responsive, multi-platform product that gave voters the tools to understand not just the election — but each other.
But something wasn’t quite right… Instead of seeing a flourishing community of respectful yet passionate debate and the exchanging of ideas across the political spectrum, we started to see what most of America was experiencing. Hateful bullying, trolling, name-calling, and fire-wars based on fake news, lies, and speculation resulted in the disastrous situation that we are living with now. After the November election, we took a step back and realized that this was not what Brigade believed in. We believe in a democracy that respects all people. We value facts over opinion and we believe the American political system is ultimately broken and can only be fixed when all citizens have a voice and engage in it. We took a step back and ultimately decided to sunset Brigade: 2016 and start in a new direction. Brigade is now focused on collective action based on the issues you care about by giving the activists and organizers in all communities the tools to create the change they want to see. We are just at the beginning, releasing the first BETA in the coming weeks. So stay tuned as we work tirelessly to create a democracy where all are represented with an equal voice.
